Custody dispute in one state, parents in other state

Question:

What assistance is there for Service member to have legal assistance in the state where there is currently a child custody case. For example - mother in Florida and Father in North Carolina but custody case is in Georgia. Father is in violation of current custodial arrangements of 16 year old.

Jim's Reply:

Custody and other family court issues generally must be held and decided in the jurisdiction where the child is a resident. You're describing a situation where nobody is in GA where you say the case is being decided and that doesn't usually work. The custodial parent will need to reach out locally for assistance.

  • PS from StatesideLegal:  Using the "Find Legal Help" directory to find an LRS provider in GA, the parent could request a low-cost consultation with a local attorney experienced in custody and military issues.
