Medical Separation benefits
Question:
Jim, my husband was medically discharged after almost 20 years in the Navy Submarine Service. When he received his disability discharge the government took back the money he had been paid including his hazardous duty pay and bonuses given him while at sea. Did they have the right to take back this pay and if not what do we do now? Thank you for your help.
Jim's Reply:
Veterans aren't allowed to collect medical separation pay benefits simultaneously with VA benefits. Collecting both benefits for what is essentially the same injury, illness or condition is viewed as double-dipping and isn't allowed. Further explanation is available here .
