AFRH Admission
Question:
In September, I had occasion to visit the AFRH Washington with the purpose to make my application for residence. I am 100% P/T for PTSD since 1996. It is now my understanding that a psychiatric disability is a disqualifier. Is this true for PTSD sufferers? By all appearances, a wonderful home.
Jim's Reply:
In addition to other qualifiers, the admission requirements say that, "a person who...is not free of drug, alcohol, or psychiatric problems shall be ineligible to become a resident of the Retirement Home". If we assume that treatment for your PTSD is psychiatric in nature that would appear to disqualify you. It's a bit of a Catch 22...if you argue that your 100% PTSD rating isn't really a mental health problem, you risk losing the benefit. You'd have to talk with them directly to see if your stable mental health condition would be granted admission to their facility. If you aren't having "psychiatric problems" as they say, you may qualify.
