Aunt has custody of servicemember's son
Question:
Hello , I have custody of my nephew. I have been raising him since he was 3 days old. His dad is military, They left him and the state gave me custody. I am in a fixed income and he will be 4 come Feb. I have been trying to get help child support from both parents. I love this child and will do all I can for him, but they are not helping me help him. Please help me or point me in the right direction. Thank you
Jim's Reply:
When you were given custody of the child, all sorts of legal arrangements should have been made at that time, including any mandatory child support payments from his parents. I don't understand the circumstances of how you became the guardian of the child but it's likely that whatever agency was involved is where you'll have to return to for help. The very best thing you could do is to retain an attorney who is familiar with the family court and those laws, rules and regulations and who could help you seek assistance from the child's parents.
