Family lawyer through VA?

Question:

Hello Jim,
I actually do have a question regarding my military disability, but more importantly, I was told I should ask you about any help that may be available to me regarding this situation. This is the email I'm sending out:
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
I'm looking into what help may be available to me in regards to a family lawyer through the VA? I am a 100% disabled Vet. I currently share 50% custody of my two daughters, aged 3 and 4, but am looking for full custody temporarily. My ex wife/ their mother, has continued to sink into a worse and worse life. She got fired from her job as a reputable esthetician for being late, drug usage and stuff, and is now a stripper and an escort. Her roommate confirms that her house is still a complete disaster, some have compared it to a crack house. My daughters sleep on piss soaked mattresses, the floor is a disaster, they get fed Fast Food for lunch and dinner, and she just sits them down in front of a TV while she either sleeps or practices new dances.I do NOT have much money, and people I've talked to has said that a divorce lawyer will cost between 10-15 thousand dollars. This is just something I can not afford. I wanted to reach out to see if the VA offers any type of legal help for family matters? We both live in Reno, NV.
Any help you can offer I'd appreciate it. Thank you for your time,

Jim's Reply:

There are no free divorce lawyers for veterans. Divorce isn't a VA problem, it's a personal problem that has nothing to do with VA.  Divorce lawyers don't do a lot of charity work because why should they? it's hard to imagine a less desirable line of work where everybody is angry, children are involved and families come apart at the seams. I wouldn't do that for free and I don't know of anyone who would. And do you really want a free lawyer when this is so important?  When friends tell you how much a lawyer would cost and you haven't asked a lawyer or shopped around, I have to wonder just how much you want to do anything. You need to call lawyers in your region and make a deal...it really can be that simple. Your friends aren't helping...pick up the phone and get to work.
