Gastritis and GERD

Question:

Hello Jim I was recently denied service-connection for gastritis because the VA says there’s no continuity, though I was diagnosed with it in service. I am now suffering from GERD.  what advice can you offer to help me with my claim?

Jim's Reply:

One problem you face is that gastritis and GERD are different conditions. GERD is related to irritation in the esophagus (heartburn), gastritis is related to irritation in the stomach. If you were treated briefly for gastritis while on active duty but the gastritis wasn't labeled as a chronic condition, VA will view that as a temporary condition without lasting disabling effects. That you now have a diagnosis of GERD won't help with a claim for gastritis.
