Question:

Jim, I have always considered only those that served in Vietnam as Vietnam Veterans. My ex wife and I both served during the Vietnam war.  When she passed away someone had Vietnam veteran placed on her headstone. I am not sure I agree with this?? Your feedback.

This is a topic that comes up often. I served in Germany 1968-1970. I call myself a Vietnam era vet, not a Vietnam vet. On the other hand, the Vietnam Veterans of America call anyone who served during the era a Vietnam vet and they are allowed membership in the VVA. Tens of thousands who served on the periphery of the war got the Vietnam service medal,  but they aren't entitled to an array of Vietnam war benefits.  I tend to agree with you,  but I try to avoid being too vocal about it because I believe that most people don't understand the differences as you and I do and that calling us Vietnam vets is a matter of intended respect and courtesy. If you feel strongly, it's your decision to act. For me...I'd leave it alone.
