Ex-wife wonders about disability benefits

Question:

When my ex- husband dies,  will I receive a portion of his 100% disability?

Jim's Reply:

It doesn't sound as if you're an eligible dependent. Former spouses and adult children generally aren't dependents of the veteran,  so there are no benefits available. No matter the circumstance, surviving dependents don't get a portion of the disability payment, rather they are eligible for a benefit called DIC. If the veteran dies of a service connected, rated condition, the surviving dependents are eligible to apply for DIC. If the veteran is 100% rated and has held that rating uninterrupted for more than ten years, the survivors are eligible to apply for DIC no matter the cause of death.
