TDIU and Activities of Daily Living

Question:

Hi Jim, thanks for all the information on your website. I am 100% TDIU permanent and live at home with my wife. I am compromised at home as I have constrictures in my urethra which causes scar tissue and require the daily use of a catheter. My hands have dupuytrens contracture causing difficulty in fine motor movement. My wife must assist me in daily catheter use and limits my time out of the home. I need be near by for the times I can not void and need her to help me with insertion of the catheter and I need to be in a supine sterile environment to do this. I am curious if I am eligible for special compensation benefits under L . Thank you for all you do. My original surgeries causing this problem are all service connected. Thanks for all you do.

Jim's Reply:

The best answer I can offer is "maybe". I'm going to urge you to formally apply for that and any other benefit that may be open to you. It appears that you have a good understanding of how this all works so I'll also suggest that you DIY all the way. You can explain how all this negatively affects your ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) (**Naming ADL restrictions precisely is important**) and makes you housebound. VA is changing the approach to home health care and what program may be available to you will remain a mystery until you apply for it. Go for it and as you're able, please keep us posted of your progress.
