Can there be weapons in the house if a veteran who is declared incompetent lives there?

Question

Jim, I have read over the net that the field examiner can insist that since my mother lives with me, there can be no guns in the house. My mother has never fired a weapon and does not know how, but I have several firearms in the house. They are secured in a locked gun safe. Please tell me this is not true. Thanks.

The rules are a little sketchy here. The veteran who is declared incompetent is not allowed to purchase or own firearms. Whether or not she is allowed to live in an environment where there may be firearms is another question entirely. To restrict weapons within the home is usually targeted at the veteran who lives with a spouse and who may try to conceal his access to weapons by claiming they belong to the spouse. But each case is different and when the field examiner brings it up, you should be open and honest and then determine what you may want to do.
