Veteran looking for tax preparation help

Question:

Hello Jim, I am a Vietnam Era Veteran and I am looking for Tax Preparers in the Cleveland, OH area who help Veterans with their Tax Returns. Thank You

Jim's Reply:

You're a bit ahead of the curve, aren't you? First up...be wary of free or discounted tax prep services. Like used car deals, they aren't always legit. Ask around at your VA clinic or hospital facility for a referral to someone you can trust. Often enough during tax season there will be individuals who will offer tax prep though VA or a VSO and that's a good choice.

  • PS from StatesideLegal:  There are some legitimate free services provided by nonprofit orgnaizations to eligible individuals.  For instance, United Ways and other nonprofits offer free tax preparation through the VITA program. although most sites aren't open until February.  AARP also offers a free tax aide program to eligible individuals, which includes both the opportunity to submit online questions or to go to a site where volunteers are available. More about their program is provided here.
