unmarried mom wonders if children can access benefits

Question:

My daughters are 15 and 17.  they get their Dads SSDI from their dad he just passed away he was a Vietnam Veteran.  can they claim resources or what kind of benefits can they claim?  I was never married but my daughters are his??   thank you!

Jim's Reply:

If he was receiving VA benefits, there is some slight possibility that they would be eligible for dependents benefits. However, if that were the case they would likely already know about their dependent status. You'll have to determine what his status was by working with VA or searching his documents and then determining if there are benefits to be had.
