Secondary condition from treatment

Jim,

In reference to your ED article. I am 100% PTSD and applied for ED based on the psych meds I was taking. The side effects listed ED as a possibility. I had a C&P by a Urologist who simply reviewed my medical file and concurred that the meds were a factor. A few weeks later I was notified that my claim was successful and began receiving the special compensation.

Thank you for sharing that. As with most claims we file with VA, we will always prevail if we have a well grounded claim and we stick to the rules that VA plays by.

In this case your PTSD is service connected. The treatments have side effects. Negative side effects can and should be claimed as secondary to the primary service connected condition. Medications are often a source of erectile dysfunction and as ED is a serious condition, you should be compensated.

Obtaining the support of an M.D., particularly an expert specialist, is important. That evidence is significant to the rater who will know that the decision to award the benefit is well supported.

Approaching any claim in this methodical fashion is the way to go.
