Free Legal Services for will and power of attorney

Question:

I'm looking for free will preparation; power of attorney assistance as an honorably discharged veteran. I retired from the Reserves but not eligible to collect retirement pension until I turn 59-1/2. I was told that these services are not free for me until then. (Pink card ID to Green card ID). Can you please assist? I reside in MD.

Jim's Reply:

To my knowledge and belief there aren't any consistently offered free services specific to veterans who seek help with probate issues like wills. I'm also not aware of such services being offered to retirees unless it's on a JAG to-do list near you. It wouldn't hurt to check but I have my doubts.

I am aware that there are offerings of basic probate services often enough as an exercise by law schools and in most communities there are legal aid organizations that may be able to help low income citizens. There are any number of on-line offerings that seem to be legit and they offer a low cost but basic service for uncomplicated probate documents usually very specific to the state you're in. That sort of a DIY service may be the quickest and most cost effective way for you to proceed.

  • PS from StatesideLegal:  Special free "wills for heroes" clinics are organized by local lawyers and legal aid programs from time to time. Please note, however,  that these programs usually require 'in person' help that cannot happen at the moment because of Covid 19 restrictions. In the meantime, use our "Find Legal Help" directory to get the phone numbers for your local LRIS and LSC providers and ask if anything is being planned for the future in your area..
