Question:
I have one more question Jim , if a veteran”s award for disability benefits states "100 percent service connected and permanent," what does the word permanent mean regarding disability benefits ? Thank you
Jim's Reply:
100% rated disability benefits may be temporary or permanent when assigned. Temporary ratings are often awarded when VA believes there is a significant opportunity that the disability will improve over time.
If the rating is temporary the veteran will have a future exam scheduled to determine whether the condition is static or it has improved. If the condition is improved, the 100% rating will fall to a more appropriate level.
A permanent 100% rating adds family benefits like CHAMPVA and Chapter 35 DEA into the mix that won't come up with a temp rating.
