Spousal support based on higher earnings before PTSD treatment

Question:

Last year my SC VA disability rating was increased from 80% to 100% permanent and total when I was diagnosed with PTSD. I went to a veterans treatment program for PTSD and substance abuse. I lost my job days after I returned to work, found another job. I made it almost a year sober but relapsed. My therapist said my relapse was due to a trauma response and I lost my job. I'm now employed but still required to pay $3200/month in spousal support from my divorce in 2013 which is unstainable in my current circumstances. I've reached out to get back into treatment. Since my circumstances have changed, I need legal help to get my spousal support reduced. Any assistance I could be directed to would be greatly appreciated.

There is but a single way to have child support and alimony obligations reduced, raised or otherwise modified. You must return to the court that will have jurisdiction today and formally seek a modification of any existing orders or stipulations. There is no other way...even agreements between the parties aren't acceptable without the approval of the court. Your state will determine the process of how this gets done but often enough, you don't have to hire a lawyer and you can DIY. Talk with the clerk of court to see about the papers and fees needed to get started.
