Disability not unemployment compensation

 Jim,

I saw your site and some discussions on it. I do have a question. I have a service connected injury and I am receiving disability for it. It turns out that I have to have surgery on it and it requires a 2-3 month recovery and work leave. I am self-employed and am wondering if the VA will compensate me for my time off of work?

 Reply:

If you have a service connected disability that is rated, and that condition requires hospitalization, you will receive a 100% temporary rating for 3 to 12 months. This is a convalescent benefit that applies to most but not all disabling conditions. This is true regardless of your employment.

At the end of the recuperative period, you will have a C & P exam that will determine a new rating. If the treatment is successful, your rating may be lower than before.
