Servicemembers who are called to active duty or otherwise relocated have some protections against punitive actions by their landlords. The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) provides several procedural rights beyond those provided under state landlord/tenant laws, including:
- early lease termination
- timely return of security deposit
- protections against eviction
- protections against self-enforcement of storage liens
- protections against default judgments, and
- stay of court proceedings
