military dependent of an abuser

Question:

Would the military or any divisions of assist with jurisdiction issues and/or child custody cases where the ex spouse is an abuser? The child is a military dependent.

Jim's Reply:

If the parties are active duty they may seek advice through their JAG services. Otherwise the military and the VA are reluctant to be involved in marital issues. If the military had wanted you to have a spouse and dependents, they'd have issued them. Yes, that's an old joke based in truth. When there are divorce issues, a civilian lawyer is always the best choice.
