Lease?

Question:

My house lease expired and I stayed in the house and gave a 60 days written notice to move in June but, due to covid, couldn't retire on time and i have to stay until September. The lease company renewed the lease until next April without telling me and now they want orders to cancel the lease,  but I am not transferring, I am retiring. Can I cancel the lease due to retirement?

Jim's Reply:

I don't know. The lease will have the reasons you can cancel written in the small print. If it says you can cancel due to retirement, you're home free. Otherwise you need to negotiate an out with the company.

I don't understand how a lease was extended without your approval? If you haven't signed a lease that's one thing but if you signed it and just didn't notice the end date, that's on you. If I were you I'd negotiate with the leasing company first and then if necessary, retain a lawyer.
