Question:
I live in South Dakota and am currently going through a divorce. We had paperwork drawn up by a lawyer -- he was in the military wwith my husband and we wanted to do it fairly and not very expensive. I got the papers and there isn’t any way I can pay what he asked. We are a 50/50 state but I’m living off my disability/pension and he makes approx $90,000/yr. I’m struggling to find a job because of my PTSD I’ve applied to over a hundred places, had about 6 interviews and I am never hired. I’m scared and don’t know where to turn. He is stashing large amounts of cash around the house I have found and some other disturbing things. Can you guide me to help?
Jim's Reply:
The best I can offer to you is that you need a lawyer...one who is local to you...to represent you. Having a friend of your soon to be ex-spouse take care of the paperwork sounds like a recipe for disaster for you.
- PS from StatesideLegal: Use the "Find Legal Help" directory to look for another attorney. If you are low-income, you may qualify for free legal aid services from Dakota Plains or East River Legal Services. If not, try the South Dakota Bar Association LRS program and request a low-cost consult with a lawyer who specializes in divorce.
