Reply,

That's a difficult question to answer since I don't know about your other rated conditions.

However, I can offer a sort of general guideline by telling you that if your PTSD is severe or significant, yes...you should file a claim for it. You may not see an immediate increase in your rating. The ratings schedule is complex once you're at 100%. Most conditions added after that won't increase the overall rating or add any money to your monthly deposit.

However...you will be establishing the service connection now so that if that or any other condition becomes worse in the future, this work is already done. Veterans who become worse over time may eventually be eligible for special monthly compensation (SMC). The SMC ratings are in addition to any underlying ratings. In your case, you mention the loss of function of a limb and I'll assume that's from your experience with a land mine. If that debilitating injury gets even worse with age, that can affect your mental health. When we're younger, we can adapt more readily to the need for assisting or prosthetic devices. Once we get older, it isn't as easy and that can cause depression and anxiety on top of any PTSD or similar mental health condition.

The process to get a condition recognized and rated is taking 2 years these days. To prepare for your future, you may want to proceed to file a claim for the PTSD so that it is a part of the record. That way, if anything happens and your health declines, you've already done the hard work and the need for any other VA claims gets easier.
