18 years with "curable" breast cancer

Question:

Jim, I've had service connected bi-lateral breast cancer over the last 18 years. I know the VA considers all cancers curable and C&P exams are always projected. I am 67 and still being treated for the cancer so I'm 100%. At some point will the VA just say, hey, this lady is old, fighting cancer for 18 years, still being treated so might as well make her P&T to avoid wasting funds by recalling for C&P's, paperwork, etc? Other issues would prohibit me from returning to gainful employment so in the end I would get TDUI. Have you ever seen it where a vet in my position gets P&T? Financially, it would benefit me greatly as I would save on property tax. My spouse would also be eligible for benefits when I die. What do you think?

Jim's Reply:

Yes, at age 70 most benefits like yours are made permanent. The issue of permanent v. temporary is one that needs a lot of attention...VA hasn't kept the ratings schedule updated well at all. But for now, we have to deal with this. For what it's worth, if you pass of the cancer or a related condition, your survivor will be eligible for DIC whether you're permanently rated or not.
